In practice, some procedures require you to have a Photo of your identity card or a Photo of your passport submit. But you can (and should) redact some information. We'll show you what you can redact.
This is how it works:
Your identity card (EU model)

Black out the information as shown in the picture. However, the following information should remain legible (red arrows):
- First name
- Name
- Date of birth
- Place of birth
- Signature
- the last three digits of the ID number (top right corner)
Your passport

Black out the information as shown in the picture. However, the following information should remain legible (red arrows):
- First name
- Name
- Date of birth
- Place of birth
- Signature
- the last three digits of the ID number (top right corner)
Where you live is nobody's business
It can often make sense to identify yourself with your passport instead of your ID card, as unlike the ID card, the passport does not contain any information about your registration address. So if you don't trust the person you're meeting or want to keep your details secret, it's often a smart idea to use your passport instead of your ID card.
You always fulfill your obligation to identify yourself (it is very controversial whether there is such an obligation at all) by presenting a passport.
